Prototyping as a Requirements Clarification Tool

Use prototypes to validate requirements and refine understanding through hands-on exploration.

Prototypes—ranging from low-fidelity sketches to interactive mockups—make requirements concrete and testable. Rather than trying to imagine how a system will work based on written descriptions, stakeholders interact with a prototype and discover missing requirements, unrealistic assumptions, or unclear interfaces. Prototypes are especially valuable for user experience design, complex workflows, or when stakeholders struggle to articulate needs. Low-fidelity prototypes (paper sketches, wireframes) are fast and inexpensive, making them ideal for early exploration. High-fidelity prototypes feel closer to the final product but require more effort. The key is using prototypes as conversation tools, not finished designs.
