Managing Complexity in Multinational Supply Chains

Identify sources of complexity and risk in global supply chains and design mitigation strategies.

Global supply chains create efficiency but also fragility. They're vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions, natural disasters, regulatory changes, and quality issues spread across borders. Complexity increases with the number of suppliers, number of countries involved, and degree of just-in-time coordination. Effective global supply chain management requires not just efficiency optimization but explicit risk management: redundancy for critical inputs, supplier diversification, scenario planning, real-time visibility, and contingency plans. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed how concentrated global supply chains can be—many companies learned they need some redundancy and flexibility, not pure efficiency. The challenge is balancing cost efficiency with resilience.
