Managing Choking and Airway Obstruction

Perform appropriate interventions for partial and complete airway obstruction in conscious and unconscious victims.

Airway obstruction can rapidly become life-threatening. BHV responders must distinguish between partial obstruction (person can cough, wheeze) and complete obstruction (person cannot speak or cough). For conscious adults with complete obstruction, the Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts) is the standard technique. For unconscious victims, back blows and chest thrusts may be necessary. Different interventions apply to infants and children. Prompt recognition and correct technique can dislodge objects before brain damage occurs from oxygen deprivation. Refresher training ensures responders maintain muscle memory for these critical techniques and stay updated on any guideline changes.
