Evaluate how diversity affects group dynamics and explain conditions under which diversity enhances or undermines performance.
Research shows diverse teams—in gender, race, background, expertise, and perspective—have cognitive advantages: they bring multiple viewpoints, challenge assumptions, and generate more creative solutions. However, diversity alone doesn't guarantee better outcomes. Diverse teams also face challenges: higher communication friction, greater chance of subgroups forming, more potential for conflict. Whether diversity becomes an asset or liability depends on group processes and organizational context. Psychological safety—the belief that you can speak up without fear of ridicule or punishment—is critical. When psychological safety is high, diverse teams benefit from their different perspectives.
